Nail Shapes Guide: Almond, Square, Round, Coffin and Stiletto
18 designs By type, length and shape Updated 8 Oct 2026
Choosing between nail shapes is the first step of any manicure, because the shape decides how long your fingers look and which art fits. Each picture below is an original design on one shape, with the length, shades and time, plus a note on who it suits.
There are seven common shapes: square, squoval, round, oval, almond, coffin and stiletto. Round, oval and squoval work on your own short nails. Almond needs a little length. Coffin and stiletto need long nails, so they are usually done as nail extensions or acrylic nails.
If your nails are small, also see nail art for short nails. Our nail art guide covers the tools you need to file and paint at home.
Almond Shaped Nails
Almond nails are slim at the sides and taper to a soft point, like the nut. They make fingers look longer and suit short fingers and wide nail beds.

- 45 min, intermediate
A curved white tip follows the almond point and looks graceful. Suits engagements as well as office.
Artist tip: File the sides straight in first, then round them toward a centre point.

- Length
- Long, almond
- Colours
- Red, gold
- Time
- 50 min, intermediate
Glossy red with three tiny gold dots on long almond nails. A classic festive set.
Artist tip: Long almond nails usually need gel or acrylic to hold the point without breaking.

- Length
- Medium, almond
- Colours
- Pale pink, white
- Time
- 60 min, intermediate
Pale pink marble softens the pointed shape. Pretty for brunch and baby showers.
Artist tip: Drop white into wet pink and drag gently with a thin brush for soft veins.
Square Nails and the Squoval Nail Shape
Square nails have straight sides and a flat tip. Squoval is a square with softened corners. Both suit long, slim fingers and anyone who types a lot.

- Length
- Short, square
- Colours
- Navy blue
- Time
- 30 min, beginner
Short square in navy looks sharp and strong. Best for slim fingers, as wide square tips can look heavy.
Artist tip: File straight across the tip, then straight down each side. Do not saw back and forth.

- Length
- Medium, squoval
- Colours
- Milky white
- Time
- 35 min, beginner
Softened corners do not snag on clothes and chip less than sharp square. A great everyday shape.
Artist tip: File a square first, then take one or two light strokes on each corner.

- Length
- Long, square
- Colours
- Nude, black
- Time
- 50 min, intermediate
A straight black tip echoes the flat edge of the square. Modern and smart.
Artist tip: Straight tips suit square nails best. Use tape for a clean edge.
Round Nails and Oval Nails
Round nails follow the curve of your fingertip, and oval is a little longer with soft sides. Both are easy to keep and suit short nails and fuller fingers.

- Length
- Short, round
- Colours
- Coral
- Time
- 25 min, beginner
Short round nails are the most practical shape of all. Coral feels cheerful for summer.
Artist tip: Follow the curve of your fingertip and leave a thin white edge for strength.

- Length
- Medium, oval
- Colours
- Nude, gold
- Time
- 40 min, intermediate
Oval nails look graceful and slim the fingers. The gold line adds a quiet festive shine.
Artist tip: Shape like an egg, with a narrow tip and soft sides. Draw the gold line near the cuticle.

- Length
- Short, round
- Colours
- Lavender, white
- Time
- 30 min, beginner
Lavender with small dots on round nails. Round and oval are kind to fuller fingers.
Artist tip: Keep the dots tiny and close to the tip, so the nail still looks long.
Coffin or Ballerina Nails
Coffin, also called ballerina, is long and tapered with a flat tip. It needs length, so it is usually done with extensions. It suits long fingers and party looks.

- Length
- Long, coffin
- Colours
- Nude, pink
- Time
- 100 min, salon
A nude to pink fade softens the long coffin shape. Lovely for engagements.
Artist tip: Ask for coffin extensions with a narrow flat tip, then a sponge blend.

- Length
- Long, coffin
- Colours
- Mauve, gold
- Time
- 110 min, salon
Matte mauve with a gold edge on the flat tip, made for receptions and cocktail nights.
Artist tip: Matte top coat all over, then a fine gold line along the flat tip.

- Length
- Medium, coffin
- Colours
- Wine red
- Time
- 90 min, salon
A shorter coffin is easier to wear daily and still on trend.
Artist tip: Keep the taper gentle at medium length, or the tip gets too narrow.
Stiletto Nails
Stiletto nails are long and taper to a sharp point. They are the boldest shape and need acrylic or hard gel. Save them for parties, not housework weeks.

- Length
- Long, stiletto
- Colours
- Burnt orange
- Time
- 2 hr, salon
Matte burnt orange looks warm and bold. Great for Navratri nights.
Artist tip: Stiletto needs a strong apex. Ask for acrylic or hard gel, not polish alone.

- Length
- Medium, stiletto
- Colours
- Black, silver
- Time
- 100 min, salon
Black stiletto with silver chrome points, made for concerts and late parties.
Artist tip: Keep the point slightly blunt at medium length, so it does not catch on things.

- Length
- Long, stiletto
- Colours
- Nude, crystal
- Time
- 2 hr, salon
Nude keeps the sharp shape soft and wearable for family functions.
Artist tip: One small crystal per nail, set low near the cuticle, keeps the look subtle.
Short Almond Nails
Short almond nails give the slimming look of almond without the length. Good for office, cooking and anyone growing out their nails.

How to Shape Nails at Home
- Work on dry nails. Wet nails are soft and split easily.
- Use a fine file, not a rough metal one.
- Cut length first with a clipper, leaving a little extra.
- File the sides first, then the tip, always in one direction.
- Turn your hand over and check the shape from the palm side. All ten should match.
- Smooth the edge with a buffer and apply base coat.
Changing from square to almond can take two or three sessions as nails grow. Be patient and file a little at a time.
Which Nail Shape Suits Your Hands
- Short or fuller fingers: oval and almond make them look longer and slimmer.
- Long slim fingers: square and coffin balance the length.
- Wide nail beds: almond and squoval narrow the look.
- Cooking, typing and housework: round and squoval chip the least.
Nail art questions
What is the best nail shape for chubby fingers?
Oval and almond are the most flattering. The curved sides and gentle point draw the eye up and make fingers look slimmer. Avoid very wide square tips.
Which nail shape is the strongest?
Squoval and round are the strongest because there are no sharp corners to catch and break. Stiletto is the weakest at the point.
Can I have almond nails on short nails?
Yes. Short almond nails need only a few millimetres past the fingertip. Taper the sides gently, and keep the point soft.
What is the difference between coffin and stiletto nails?
Both are long and tapered. Coffin ends in a flat tip, while stiletto comes to a sharp point. Coffin is a little easier to live with day to day.
Which nail shape is best for office?
Short squoval, round, oval and short almond all look neat at work. Pair them with nude, milky white or soft pink polish.
How often should I reshape my nails?
File lightly once a week to keep the shape even. Nails grow about three millimetres a month, so the shape drifts quickly if you skip it.
