Acrylic Nail Designs: Natural, Long, Glitter and Short Sets
18 designs By type, length and shape Updated 8 Oct 2026
These acrylic nail designs are for anyone who wants strong, long-lasting nails with a neat shape. Every picture below is an original set with its length, shades, time and a note you can show your nail artist.
Acrylic nails are made by mixing a liquid with a powder. The mix forms a soft bead that the artist presses onto your nail or a tip, shapes, and files smooth once it sets. It turns hard, so it holds length and stones better than polish alone. Your acrylic nail art can then be painted on top with regular polish or gel polish.

Acrylic Nail Application Step by Step
Knowing the steps helps you spot a careful nail artist. A full set takes about one and a half to two and a half hours.
- Cuticles are pushed back and the nail surface is lightly buffed to remove shine.
- A dehydrator and primer are brushed on so the acrylic grips.
- If you want length, a plastic tip is glued on and cut to size.
- A brush is dipped in liquid, then in powder, to pick up a small bead.
- The bead is pressed and smoothed from the tip toward the cuticle, leaving a tiny gap at the skin.
- Once hard, the nail is filed into shape and buffed.
- Colour, art and a top coat go on last.
Acrylic liquid has a strong smell. Sit near an open window, and ask for a patch test if your skin reacts easily. Doing acrylic nails at home is possible with a kit, but the first few sets are best done by a trained artist.
Acrylic and Gel Nails: Which One Suits You
Acrylic and gel nails look alike once painted, but they behave differently.
| Point | Acrylic | Gel |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Very hard, good for long nails | Slightly flexible |
| Feel | Thicker | Thinner, more natural |
| Smell | Strong while applying | Little smell |
| Wear | Three weeks, then refill | Two to three weeks |
There is also acrylic gel, sometimes called polygel. It is a thick paste that is shaped like acrylic and cured under a lamp like gel. Our guide explains the difference in more detail.
How to Make Acrylic Nails Last
- Wear rubber gloves for dishes, mopping and hand washing clothes.
- Use your finger pads, not the nails, to open cans and peel stickers.
- Add a fresh top coat every week if the shine dulls from cooking oil and haldi.
- Book a refill every two to three weeks as your nails grow.
- Never pull off a lifted nail. Get it fixed or soaked off.
A set costs more with extra length, hand-painted art, stones, chrome and the number of accent nails. If you see lifting with redness, pain or swelling, remove the set and see a dermatologist.
Nail art questions
Which is better gel or acrylic nails for daily housework?
For long nails and heavy housework, acrylic is usually stronger. Gel feels lighter and suits short to medium nails. Both need gloves for washing and a top coat refresh.
What are acrylic nails?
Acrylic nails are a hard layer made from liquid and powder. It is shaped over your own nail or over a glued tip. Once set, it can be filed and painted like a normal nail.
Do I need special acrylic nail paint?
No. Acrylic nail paint is simply regular polish or gel polish painted over the set. Coloured acrylic powder is another option, where the colour is built into the nail itself.
How long do acrylic nails last?
A set looks good for about three weeks. After that the gap at the cuticle shows, and you need a refill. With refills, the same set can go on for a couple of months.
Can I do acrylic nails at home?
You can, but it needs practice, a ventilated room and patience. Start with a thin overlay on short nails before you try tips. Patch test the liquid first.
Do acrylic nails damage natural nails?
Careful application and gentle removal cause little harm. Damage usually comes from heavy filing or ripping the set off. If your nails turn sore, thin or discoloured, see a dermatologist.
