Nail Extension Designs in Red, Pink, Black, White and Glitter
12 designs By type, length and shape Updated 8 Oct 2026
These nail extension designs are for anyone whose own nails will not grow, break easily, or are too short for the art they want. Every set here is an original design with length, shades, time and a note for your artist.
An extension is extra length built onto your nail with a tip or a form, then covered with builder gel or acrylic. Many people call them artificial nails or false nails, and press-on sets are the quick home version. Extensions are the most popular artificial nail designs for weddings because they hold stones, chrome and long shapes.
To pick the base material, compare acrylic nail designs with gel nail designs. To choose a shape, see nail shapes.

Deep wine on short square tips feels grown-up. It also hides haldi stains from the kitchen.
Artist tip: Pick a squarer shape for short tips, and seal the free edges well to stop chips.
Glitter, Ombre and Chrome Nail Extensions
These are the party sets. They take longer and need more care. Find more metal shine on our chrome nails page.

- Length
- Long, coffin
- Colours
- Pink, white
- Time
- 2 hr, salon
Pink at the base and white at the tip, blended with no line between. Often called baby boomer nails.
Artist tip: The blend is done with a sponge or airbrush. Ask for a soft fade, not a stripe.

- Length
- Medium, almond
- Colours
- Nude, gold glitter
- Time
- 100 min, salon
Nude nails with gold glitter tips are wedding friendly and look good next to gold jewellery.
Artist tip: Gold glitter is pressed into wet gel at the tips and sealed with two layers of top coat.

- Length
- Long, square
- Colours
- Silver chrome
- Time
- 2 hr, salon
Silver chrome reflects light like polished metal. Great for cocktail nights and New Year.
Artist tip: Chrome powder goes over black or grey gel for depth. Seal the edges well to stop peeling.
Types of Nail Extensions
| Type | How it is made | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Gel extensions | Plastic tips or paper forms covered with builder gel, cured under a lamp | Natural look, medium length |
| Acrylic extensions | Liquid and powder shaped over a tip or form | Long nails, heavy stones |
| Polygel | A thick paste shaped by hand, then cured | Light but strong sets |
| Press-on fake nails | Ready-made nails stuck on with nail glue or sticky tabs | One event or a weekend |
A salon set costs more with extra length, hand painting, stones, chrome and the number of nails with art. Press-ons are the cheapest way to test a long shape before you commit.
Nail Art Tips for Extensions That Last
- Go back for a refill once the gap at the cuticle shows, usually in two or three weeks.
- Wear gloves for dishes, cloth washing and floor cleaning.
- Use the pads of your fingers, not the nail tips, to open packets and press buttons.
- Add a layer of top coat at home every week to keep the shine.
- Rub cuticle oil in before bed so the skin around the nail stays soft.
Never pull or bite off an extension. Soak it off with acetone in a ventilated room, or get it removed at the salon. If a nail lifts and the skin under it turns red, sore or green, take the set off and see a dermatologist.
Nail art questions
How long do nail extensions last?
A set looks fresh for about three weeks. With refills every two to three weeks, you can keep extensions for a couple of months. Give your nails a short break after that.
Are nail extensions safe for natural nails?
Done and removed carefully, they cause little damage. Problems come from heavy filing and ripping sets off. If your nails feel thin or painful, take a break and see a dermatologist.
Which colour nail extensions suit dusky skin?
Red, wine, maroon, emerald, milky white and gold glitter all look rich on dusky skin. Warm nudes look better than grey-toned nudes.
Can I cook and do housework with extensions?
Yes, with short or medium length. Wear gloves for washing and avoid using nails as tools. Long stiletto or coffin sets need more care in the kitchen.
Can I get nail art without extension?
Yes. Most designs here can be done on your own nails with gel or regular polish. See nail art for short nails for ideas that need no added length.
What is the difference between press-on and salon extensions?
Press-ons are ready-made fake nails you glue on at home, and they last a few days to a week. Salon extensions are built on your nails and last weeks with refills.
