Gel Nail Designs: Glossy Colours, Patterns, French and Glitter
15 designs By type, length and shape Updated 8 Oct 2026
These gel nail designs give you salon shine that stays put for two to three weeks. Each picture is an original look with the length, shades, time and a short note for your nail artist.
Gel polish looks like normal nail paint in the bottle, but it only hardens under a UV or LED lamp. That is why gel nails do not smudge, and why they survive cooking and typing far better than regular polish. Below you will find plain glossy colours, gel nail polish designs with lines and swirls, French tips, sparkle and easy office sets. All of these gel nail art designs can be done in one sitting.

How Gel Nails Are Done, Step by Step
A gel manicure takes about 45 to 75 minutes, depending on the art.
- Nails are shaped, cuticles are pushed back, and the shine is buffed off lightly.
- A thin base gel goes on and is cured under the lamp for 30 to 60 seconds.
- Two thin coats of colour follow, each one cured. Thick coats wrinkle.
- Art, glitter or tips are added and cured.
- A top coat seals it all. Some top coats need a wipe with a cleanser after curing.
You can try gel polish nail art at home with a small lamp. Keep gel off your skin, since repeated contact can cause an allergy. If you notice itching or swelling around the nails, stop using gel and see a dermatologist.
Making Gel Last and Taking It Off Safely
- Wear gloves for dishes, mopping and hair colour.
- Rub a little cuticle oil in every night.
- Never peel or bite off lifted gel. It pulls away layers of your own nail.
To remove at home, file the shiny top coat lightly. Place acetone-soaked cotton on each nail, wrap in foil and wait 10 to 15 minutes. Push the softened gel off gently with an orange stick. Work in a ventilated room, keep acetone away from flames, and moisturise after. A salon visit costs more with hand-painted art, chrome, glitter, stones and the number of accent nails.
Nail art questions
How long do gel nails last?
Gel nails usually last two to three weeks. They start to show regrowth at the cuticle after that. Housework without gloves can shorten the time.
Can I do gel polish nail art at home?
Yes, if you have a UV or LED lamp and gel polish. Start with a single colour, then try dots and simple tips. Keep coats thin and never cure gel on your skin.
What is the difference between gel nails and acrylic nails?
Gel is a polish that hardens under a lamp and feels thin and flexible. Acrylic sets rock hard from a blend of liquid monomer and powder, so it can hold more length. See our acrylic nail designs to compare.
Which gel nail colours suit dusky skin?
Deep red, maroon, coffee brown, navy and warm nudes look rich on dusky and deep skin tones. Very pale pastels can look chalky, so pick ones with a warm undertone.
Do gel nails damage natural nails?
Gel itself is gentle, but peeling it off or heavy filing thins the nail. Soak it off properly and take a week off now and then. See a dermatologist if nails turn painful or discoloured.
Can I get gel on very short nails?
Yes. Gel works well on very short nails because it adds strength without length. Keep the design small, such as a micro French or a single dot.
